SKIN MYTHS BUSTED

You hear them all the time from Nan but are they really true? We got to the bottom of those age old fables...

X DON'T MOISTURIZE OIL SKIN

Even the oiliest skin can get dehydrated, so moisturizer is a must. Just make sure to choose a light lotion suited to this skin type.

X CHOCOLATE CAUSES ACNE

The pizza face theory the one that says diet is directly related your state of skin, has long been debunked. That said, some experts believe that eating too many refined foods (think white sugar, white flour and cakes) can trigger a rise in blood sugar, which has an inflammatory effect in the system. This can ultimately cause pores to clog and pimples to form. So it's best to eat foods that are as close to their natural source as possible. And, yes, this still includes chocolate just keep it dark and high quality.

X YOU MUST USE TONER

This myth comes from the days when cleanser didn't wash off properly, so we needed to take the extra step of an alcohol based toner to help clean skin. If you're using a good, modern cleanser, you won't need a toner. A non alcohol facial spritzer is a nice alternative but not essential for everyday skincare.

X EXPENSIVE SKINCARE IS BETTER THAN THE CHEAP STUFF

We all love a bit of high - end glamour, but just as chain stores have given us a great non designer option when it comes to dressing, the budget end of the beauty spectrum gives the ritzy brands a run for their money. And I'll let you in on a secret: many of the mass brands and designer brands are owned by the same companies, which means that researches and development is shared. So all the great ingredients and formulations eventually trickle down into the more affordable versions of skincare and make-up. So yes you can have champagne skin on lemonade budget.

X NATURAL IS BEST

Some natural ingredients can be toxic. And if they're not blended well into a form that delivers them effectively into the skin , what's the pint? Find a brand that works for you whether it's natural or not, or somewhere in between, and stick to it.

Always remember to test any skincare product on a small patch of your skin before using it for the first time.
