The health benefits of turmeric
79
The health benefits of turmeric have been recognized by the Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine hundreds of years. Turmeric is a characteristic ingredient of food in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Turmeric is a perennial plant of the ginger family that grows in South Asia. Turmeric is a source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin B6, niacin, manganese, iron, potassium, magnesium, omega 3 fatty acids, omega 6 fatty acids and phytosterols. He recently gained popularity because of the additional studies show that turmeric benefits mental and physical health in the following ways ...
Protects
against Alzheimer's disease
In combination with vitamin D, it helps
protect against Alzheimer's disease. Studies have shown that in some towns and
villages in India where the use of turmeric is particularly high, there are
almost no cases of Alzheimer's disease.
Protects against cancer
Preliminary studies on the possible anti-tumor activity of turmeric, may provide
clues to prevent the formation of enzymes that can cause cancer, reducing the
risk of formation and growth of cells. New research at Cork Cancer Research
Center found that turmeric has started to kill cancer cells within 24 hours.
Protects against arthritis
Powerful anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric have long been used in
ancient Indian and Ayurvedic medicine as a treatment for inflammatory disorders
such as arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Scientist have found that
turmeric extract blocked the attack of rheumatoid arthritis in rats. It seems
that the extract inhibits a protein (known as NF-KB) to be activated in the
joint. This protein is associated with increased risk of infection.
Protects against diabetes
Turmeric may help keep blood sugar under
control and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes Studies at Columbia University
Medical Center in studding obese mice that
were fed with turmeric revealed that the
mice had a significant reduction in insulin resistance and decrease inflammation,
which are positive steps in preventing type 2 diabetes
It is good for liver health
Turmeric has significant protective effects for the liver, helps reduce damage
from pathogens and toxic compounds like heavy metals, radiation, nicotine and
other chemicals.
Wound healing
Turmeric has antiseptic and analgesic properties. In ancient times, turmeric is
placed on wounds and cuts, to be cured, but also to avoid infection. Turmeric
is a natural
painkiller, so it can be used after an injury.
Stronger bones
You should drink turmeric with milk every
night because it strengthens bones and reduces the risk of developing
osteoporosis.
Heart disease
Cholesterol causes vascular damage and plaque formation. Turmeric is effective
in preventing oxidation of cholesterol thus reducing the chances of disease
from cardiovascular disease.
Benefits for skin
Turmeric is very effective remedy for skin diseases. Stir in turmeric cream and apply on problem areas. Can be
used in combination with sandalwood and milk for facial rejuvenation. In the
case of smallpox and chickenpox, turmeric is applied as a powder or as a paste
in order to facilitate the healing process.
Benefits to the hair
It can be used to treat dandruff and as a hair dye. Extracts of turmeric are used
as stimulants of hair growth.
